Two Simple and Striking Techniques for Decorating Dorm Storage

Add a Decorative Lining to Clear Storage Bins

Stackable storage bins are a handy and popular dorm storage option. Consider opting for clear plastic bins, which can be custom-decorated to fit your dorm room decor. This is a very simple decorating technique that needs only clear glue, scissors and a roll of decorating material. Popular choices include wallpaper, fabric squares and gift wrapping or scrapbooking paper.

Measure the inside walls of the storage containers. Use the measurements to cut out right-sized pieces of your decorative material. They should fit snugly against a corresponding interior wall of the containers. Use the clear glue on the decorated side of each of the pieces to stick them to the matching interior wall so that the decorative print shows through the clear plastic.

Antiquing

Antiquing is a great way to give a cool aged look to wooden furniture. Try this interesting finish on large wooden storage units to add instant style to your dorm room decor. Use a readymade antiquing kit for convenience. Most kits contain a flat or gloss based enamel and a coordinating or contrasting glaze. Consider opting for transparent antiquing glaze in shades of umber and burnt sienna to add an elegant vintage look to your furniture.

Remove all hardware and clean the cabinet surface with a detergent solution. Wipe down the wood with denatured alcohol and let it dry for 24 hours. Use sanding de-glosser and steel wool to even out the finish.

Apply a base coat of flat or gloss enamel and wait for at least two days for it to dry completely. Apply the antiquing glaze with a clean brush. Cover highlighted areas like moldings or carvings first, and then move on to the flat surfaces. Let the glaze dry until it starts to dull and then carefully wipe off the excess glaze with a cheesecloth pad. Always wipe from the center to the edges, moving along the grain of the wood.

Dab at the surface with a piece of carpeting or a stiff-bristle brush to create an antique wood-grain effect. Finally, use semi-gloss or high-gloss varnish to complete the look.
