Tone of Your Voice
The tone of voice needs to match what you are interpreting. For example, if you are interpreting a sermon in church, your tone should be very different from your tone when interpreting an exciting football match.
Regardless of the event, your tone should never be too monotonous. Basically, you should stay away from extremes. Don t be too loud but not too soft; don t come across as too angry, but don t be too happy either. It takes time to find the right balance and one of the best ways of doing this is to practice. Try to think about what sort of voice and tone makes you listen to the message this is the tone you are trying to achieve.
Accuracy
Being accurate is incredibly important. You are classed as a thinking machine and are expected to not make any mistakes, particularly if you are involved in simultaneous interpretation for live events. For example, news agencies will often hire simultaneous interpreters whenever a world leader is addressing his or her nation. Because the information that is conveyed that needs interpreting is generally quite important, it is incredibly important to be highly accurate.
Generally, you will be translating out of your native language, so do make sure that you are fully fluent in your source language as well.
Organisation
Never show up at work unprepared. Make sure you research the topic that you will be translating and also make sure that you appropriately manage your schedule. Because simultaneous interpretation is such a specialised field of work, demand is quite high.
It is important to not take on too many jobs, as you may find that your mind is still stuck on a certain subject, whilst translating a different type of subject, which would cause you to get mixed up. The dictionary will always be your best friend. It is possible that you have some sort of emotional attachment to a specific edition of the dictionary, but you need to buy a new dictionary in both your source and target language every time they are released.
