The most recent techniques in water fountain design make good use of recent advances in modern technology and fabrication methods. Some of these methods parallel processes used in the manufacture of other products that have been found to be both useful and effective in other applications. These processing include safeguards against water leakage gained from experience with the manufacture of ice handling storage containers and trial and error experience testing how water flows over various surfaces.
A notable element of water fountain design is the continued improvement of the upper water distribution unit. This distribution piece is a long strip of metal, usually copper, that directs the flow of water over the central waterfall panel below. The distribution assembly is hidden by the upper hood. It is so important to channel water effectively over the primary fountain surface both smoothly, uniformly and without splashing.
One of the major consumer complaints about indoor waterfalls has been that the water splashes or drips off onto the metal frame. To prevent this occurrence two side tabs have been added to the water distribution unit that can be bent in or out easily to channel water flow over the fountain surface. The metal lip part of the distribution unit is also being made of a thinner more pliable material which enables it to be bent easier by the end consumer as part of the installation process to adhere closely to the panel material. This process helps the water flow over the entire surface easier without having to be wet by the end consumer who may not wish to use a spray bottle to assist with even water flow each time they turn on the fountain from a dry state.
Another advancement is the incorporation of a leak resistant plastic tray liner within the lower water reservoir. Over time metal can corrode is exposed to constant water contact, for example in a basin or tank where water may sit when the fountain is not circulating. The plastic durable tray liner is much more resistant to leaking then metal. This new innovation does come with a trade-off however. The fountain user must be careful to never fill the liner with more water then indicated or the water will seep between the liner, metal and face panels and make it appear as if the fountain is leaking. This seepage can persist even when the water level falls below the fill indicator. This is why the reservoir needs to be removed and dried out completely before refilling if it appears to be leaking in any way.
A third most exciting advancement in fountain design is centered around lighting options. LED lighting is now an available option on many indoor fountains. Advanced bulbs have the ability to produce hundreds of different colors and to alternate and effect the colors with patterns and alternating effects. The ability to change the lighting gives a whole new dimension to water fountains that change to suit your mood and drastically effect the appearance of the feature while it is operating indoors.
